Sharing a flat is the easiest way to save money as a student in North Cyprus — but the person you live with matters more than the flat itself. Here's how to get it right.

Quick tips: Answer the lifestyle questions, Always view before paying, Agree house rules early

1. Decide what you're looking for

Before you start scrolling, write down your must-haves: your budget per month, the area (close to EMU, NEU, CIU or your campus?), whether bills should be included, and how you live. Do you study late? Do you smoke? Do you have guests often? Being honest now saves arguments later.

2. Use the TrncDate Roommate Finder

On TrncDate you can post "I have a room" or "I'm looking for a room". Answer the six quick lifestyle questions — tidiness, sleep, guests, smoking, noise and pets — and you'll see a match % on every room. Use the filters to narrow down by district, price, room type and university, and save the ones you like with the heart.

3. Message before you meet

Use the reply form to introduce yourself: what you study, your routine and when you'd like to move in. Ask about the other people in the flat, how bills are split and what a normal week looks like.

4. Always view the room in person

Visit the flat before you agree to anything. Check the water pressure, the heating or air conditioning, the internet and how far it really is from your campus. If someone pushes you to pay a deposit before you've seen the room, walk away.

5. Agree the rules early

  • How are rent and bills split, and when are they paid?
  • Who cleans what, and how often?
  • Are guests and partners allowed to stay over?
  • Quiet hours during exam weeks.

Writing these down in a shared chat may feel formal, but it keeps everyone friendly for the whole year.

A good roommate is someone whose habits fit yours — not just someone with a free room.
